| Drains & Waterways Workshop March 25! |
Interested central Indiana residents, particularly those in the Lower Fall Creek watershed, are encouraged to attend a “Regulated Drains and Natural Waterways” Workshop on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. The workshop is being sponsored by Lower Fall Creek Watershed Alliance and the Hamilton, Hancock, Madison, and Marion County Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD) within the watershed. The workshop is offered as a part of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) 319 Grant awarded to the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District. This grant provides funding for the development of a Watershed Management Plan (WMP) for the Lower Fall Creek Watershed which includes portions of Hamilton, Hancock, Madison, and Marion Counties. The workshop will be held at the Lapel Public Library, 610 Main Street in Lapel, Indiana and is set to begin at 6:30 pm. John South, Hamilton County SWCD and Heather Buck, Christopher B. Burke Engineering helped in coordinating this event.
During this workshop, landowners will learn more about regulated drains, the maintenance associated with regulated drains and how they can find out if the stream or creek on their property is a regulated drain. In addition, a representative from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Water will be on hand to provide information on log jams and any permitting requirements for log jam removal. Additionally overviews will also be provided regarding available USDA funding for conservation projects in the Lower Fall Creek Watershed through the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Farm Service Agency and the newer concept of 2-Stage Ditch Design and its applications in an agricultural setting. For more information on the “Regulated Drains and Natural Waterways” workshop, please contact the Marion County Soil and Water Conservation District at (317) 786-1776. Due to the grant, there is no charge for attending the workshop, but registrations are to be called into the Marion County SWCD office or emailed to Marilyn Hughes at marilyn-hughes@iaswcd.org by Monday March 23rd.
